“Excuse me” the girl had her hair pulled back in a ponytail and her mouth was full of pink bubble gum. “There’s no gum in the Library” the woman replied from behind the stack of books. “Whatever ma’am, I need to find a book for my Critical paper on some Holden guy…” The librarian stood up from the back, her face tight from youth and her hair still golden blonde by genes. “Check the section your teacher assigned you instead of asking me before doing your own work” the teenage girl walked away in slight disgust looking at the model condition Librarian. ‘What the hell is a woman like that doing in a place like this?’ she asked her self as she walked away.
“Mary, for future reference I would wish that you would deal with our clients with more poise while your on the job” the man younger than his appearance, in his leather elbow-padded arms said under his breath as he walked by “More of that from you and you’ll be fired” She peered over her wide rimmed glasses “Yes, sir” she went back to her books.
Most people look at my job and they see it being the most boring job on earth or else they look at me and say that it’s a pity I’m here, or that the rumors behind sexy librarians are true that we do it in the stacks. And I won’t deny it. It’s happened. To me? God no. I’m actually what is seen as the rare minority a beautiful women endowed with smarts. I’m stuck here, out of my own will not some punishment. I enjoy reading. But this is my day job. At night? I write. Not books, not a blog, but a Zine. I’m the revolutionary for the underground. I’ve been reviewed and sold hundreds of copies, but I don’t dare reveal my identity. It’s like a superhero. I’ve seen my boss read it once and comment on the poetic styles and the sestina in the center. But if I were to reveal myself my life would become a mess as people would come and harass me about my opinions on literature and art. Instead I’ll think I’ll keep it as my own little secret.
“Oh misssus” an old lady is walking in right now with identical stacks of books “which of these do you recomend for my book club” Gotta run, having a secret identity is hard to keep up. The upside of working here is free access to the copier!
