An envelope arrives in the mail with no return address

My name’s not Mavis, I thought as I looked at the strange envelope from today’s mail.  It had my last name, my address but my name is Maggie not Mavis.  I checked the front and the back of the envelope for a return address and found none.  Oddly, there was no postage stamp and no cancellation.

Slightly unnerved, I sat the envelope on the counter.  Briefly, I considered that maybe I should call someone about this.  The only way into my mailbox is from the key that the mail carrier has to all the mailboxes on the pedestal. I am sure that the mail carrier wouldn’t have left it.

Grabbing an ice tea from the refrigerator, I warily kept an eye on the envelope.  I didn’t think anything would happen to it, I was just trying to figure out what to do with it.

Taking a few sips from the bottle, I made up my mind.  I had to open this envelope.    I didn’t understand why the envelope was so bare, but I had to learn it’s secrets.

Carefully, I opened the envelope. Once it was open, I held it for a moment.  Did I really need to know?  Yes, I did.

I tipped the envelope on end and out slid a single sheet of paper.  It was a photocopy of a birth certificate.  The name on the certificate was a Mavis with my last name.  The date of birth was mine but the parents names were not.  “Strange,” I thought.

At the bottom of the photocopy was a small handwritten note.  It read it is time you found out who you really are.  Your name is Mavis.  Love Mom.
