StoryADay May Guest Writing Prompt Fact Sheet

Interested in providing a writing prompt for participants in this year’s StoryADay May? Great!

Here’s more information:

The prompt can be any thing you like: a scenario, a word, a picture, a list of unrelated ideas, or anything that might spark a story.

In previous years, StoryADay May writers have been inspired by prompts from John Wiswell. P. Djèlí Clark, Roxane Gay, Simon Rich, Lori Ostlund, Heidi Durrow, Deesha Philyaw, Caroline Kim, Mary Robinette Kowal, KB Carle, Rachel Swearingen, Joe R. Lansdale, Jonathan Maberry, Joanne Harris, Hallie Ephron, Gretchen Rubin, Preemie Mohamed, Jennifer Hudak and more.

I’ll post the prompt on the StoryADay site along with a bio and a link to anything you’re currently promoting, and send it out to my list of several thousand writers, during May.

If you would be willing, you can find out more at http://storyaday.org/guest

I would love to have all the prompts by April 12, 2026, but there is some wiggle room, especially if I know a prompt is coming.

There’s no expectation that you’ll participate further after providing a prompt.

MORE ABOUT STORYADAY:
Since May 2010 thousands of writers have come to StoryADay.org in May to challenge themselves to write creatively every day: writing and finishing a story every day in May. Our writers have gone on to develop a lifelong writing habit. Some have received their first (and fiftieth!) publication acceptance, even signed with agents and publishing houses for their first novels! StoryADay has been picked as a Writer’s Digest 101 Best Websites for Writer ‘Best of the Best’ and as one of their 23 favorite podcasts.

ABOUT JULIE DUFFY
Julie is a writer and the host of StoryADay.org, a creativity challenge, writer’s community and podcast. She has written for ‘Writer’s Digest’ and ‘Writers’ Journal’ magazines, is an occasional columnist for WriterUnboxed.com and hosts writing workshops online and in person. She has partnered with PenguinRandomHouse’s Signature Reads, and her next short story will appear in ‘Analog’ in May 2026.

Thanks for your time and your writing.
Best wishes,
Julie

P. S. If you know of someone else who’d like to prompt, please feel free to share this. I’m particularly interested in prompts from writers in traditionally underrepresented groups and people who write short stories.
