Earlier this month I asked you to think about what kind of mood you like in stories
Today I’m asking you to consider the mood, or ‘vibe’, you want to create during the challenge.
Are you aiming for:
- Experimental?
- Ambitious?
- Playful?
- Energized?
- Confident?
- Focused?
- ‘Determinedly outrunning your perfectionism and getting something written’?
What do you want to feel on the 1st when you look back at your month?
Journal about it, and then post your target ‘vibe’ below in the comments. Let it set the tone every time you start a writing session).
Superstars Invitation: Want to guarantee you’ll finish the challenge with that feeling? StoryADay Superstars provides the scaffolding you need to keep your vibe high — and your stories flowing — long after the initial excitement fades. Then, we’ll spend the next five months building on that success to create a writing habit that fits your life today, not ‘some day’.
I’m going for “playful” this May. It’s been more than a decade since I last participated in this challenge, and when I read back on those short stories, it feels like I’m reuniting with old friends again after living abroad. You forget just HOW quirky some of those characters are after being apart for so long. It’s a fantastic rediscovery. I’m ready for more fun and to make new friends along the way.
The vibe I want to aim for in May is: fun.
Experimental – for using the prompts to explore an idea for a new novel in a totally new world.
Fluid – to keep myself from going into knots trying to make all the prompts fit into the exploration idea – to roll with whatever the days brings.
Focused – to stick to my plan, even after a small detour. Tangents are fun. Too much fun, at times!
I know this is three moods, but I feel like they work well together. I’m happy to try covering all my bases. (Look Fallon, I used a baseball metaphor!)
I’d have to pick “Determinedly outrunning my perfectionism and getting something written.”
At this stage of raising kids, there is NO ryhthm or routine to be found (and yes, I’ve looked under the couches and everywhere) — but I still want to write! Regularly!
Words for my vibe: Happily relentless. I’ve locked myself into showing up each day and I’m wildly energized by it at this moment. I think I’ll roll with that. 😄
I’m going for the “Curiosity” vibe.
Both of my projects would benefit for a big dose of curiosity, and — as we say when characters are encouraged to investigate that really cool looking thicket — what could possibly go wrong?
Bwah-ha-hah!
My mood for Story a Day in May is “focused.” I am working my way through a “Tell Me Your Life Story, Aunt” workbook for my nephew. This is a great project at this stage in my life because I’m delving into memoir, anyway. I’d like to have the first draft of the project complete in May so that I can ask questions of friends/relatives to fill in the holes.
What a great project! Just keep plugging away (even when it feels hard) and you’ll get there!
