This prompt was inspired by a conversation with a StoryADay Superstar who had been waiting for a package to arrive for weeks. We speculated about what it had been up to on its travels, and now it’s your turn.
The Prompt
Write the story of an inanimate object
Tips
- You can totally anthropomorphize your inanimate object if you like or you can write the story as if the object is non-human (for example, how might a package experience the various places it passes through on its journey. how do the contents shift and affect how it feels? What concerns does it have? What hopes and dreams?)
- This seems like it would lend itself to a very short story, so if you find yourself stuck for ideas after you’ve set it up, consider that you might be overthinking the short story.
- This is an opportunity to write a weird little story that doesn’t have to look or sound like a mini-novel. You can write it first-person or third-person, you can eschew punctuation entirely if you fancy it.
If you share you story somewhere (and here’s why you might not want to) post a link here so we can come and read it.
